அதர்வணவேதத்தின் சில பகுதிகளைப் படித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தபொழுது தன்னிகழ்வாகக் கண்ணில்பட்ட் ஒரு பகுதி. என்னை உலுக்கியெடுத்துவிட்டது. ஆத்மனைப் பற்றிப் பேசும் பகுதி இது. சுட்டியைச் சொல்லாவிட்டால் கட்டாயம் அணுத்துகள் இயற்பியலில் எளிதாக நுழைத்துவிடலாம்.

(எழுதுவதற்குக் கொஞ்சம் பயமாகத்தானிருக்கிறது. விட்டால் “அணுவா, அன்றே யாம் சொன்னோம்” என்று தாமரைப்பூத்த தடாகத்தினர் ஜ்வலிக்கும் பாரதப் பட்டியலில் பதினேழாவதாகச் சேர்த்துவிடுவார்கள்)

பாடலின் கவிதை வடிவம் என்னுடையது. நிறுத்தங்களும், நெகிழ்ச்சிகளும் என்னுடைய கற்பனை. உரைவடிவத்தில் மூன்று மொழிபெயர்ப்புகளை (மூன்றுமே ஆங்கிலத்தில்தான்) படித்துப் பார்த்தேன். மூன்றுமே இதன் கவித்துவத்தைத் தொடவில்லை. (பாட்ரிக் ஓளிவெல் அருகில் வந்திருக்கிறார்). மேக்ஸ் முல்லரின் ‘ஆரியக்கூத்தைப்’ படித்தவுடன் சற்று ஏமாற்றம் வந்தது.

நான் படித்த ஆங்கில மூலங்கள் இதோ;

That which cannot be seen, nor seized, which has no family and no caste, no eyes nor ears, no hands nor feet, the eternal, the omnipresent (all-pervading), infinitesimal, that which is imperishable, that it is which the wise regard as the source of all beings.'

As the spider sends forth and draws in its thread, as plants grow on the earth, as from every man hairs spring forth on the head and the body, thus does everything arise here from the Indestructible.

(By the higher knowledge) the wise realize everywhere that which cannot be perceived and grasped, which is without source, features, eyes, and ears, which has neither hands nor feet, which is eternal, multiformed, all-pervasive, extremely subtle, and undiminishing and which is the source of all.

As a spider spreads out and withdraws (its thread), as on the earth grow the herbs (and trees), and as from a living man issues out hair (on the head and body), so out of the Imperishable does the Universe emerge here (in this phenomenal creation).
