### Abstract

Indigo is the most celebrated of all natural dyes, with a dyeing tradition stretching back to 4000 BCE that endures to this day. Uniquely among naturally occurring dyes, indigo extracted from Indigofera tinctoria can be used directly as a pigment — no mordant required — producing the rich, luminous blue that earned it the nickname "blue gold."

This talk traces indigo's remarkable journey across six millennia: from large-scale cultivation in the Indus Valley Civilization, through its fraught colonial legacy in Asia, Africa, and the Americas, to its reinvention as a symbol of rebellion and resistance in denim. We will also chart the disruption brought by the advent of synthetic indigo in the late 19th century.

But indigo's story is far more than commerce and chemistry. Woven through this history are threads of science, art, fashion, music, food, religion, and royalty — as well as surprising appearances in the biology of fungi, plants, and animals. Together, they reveal how a single pigment has coloured human civilization in ways both literal and profound.

Venkat Venkataramanan is Chief Scientific Officer at McRae Imaging, Toronto, and the founder and Chief Technology Officer of Lumentra Inc. He also holds academic appointments as Industry Professor at the McMaster School of Biomedical Engineering, McMaster University, and Adjunct Professor in Materials Science & Engineering at the University of Toronto.

Venkataramanan earned his doctoral degree in Physics from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, and went on to build a distinguished international career spanning research and teaching positions across the UK, India, Portugal, Japan, China, and Canada.

A recognized leader in colour science and lighting, he currently serves as President of the Colour Research Society of Canada and President of the Tamil Literary Garden, Canada. He previously served as President of the Canadian National Committee of the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) from 2012 to 2019, and as Vice President (Canada) of the Joint Technical Committee ISO-CIE TC 274 from 2015 to 2019.
